³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Alumni Spotlight

  • GPISD is proud to recognize alumnae Canessa Swanson, a 2012 Galena Park High School graduate. Canessa, who grew up in Colorado, had the opportunity to attend GPISD schools from 8th-12th grade after her mother - Catherine Swanson – began a job at Galena Park High School. While a student at GPHS, Canessa excelled in academics and sports, receiving the Newcomer of the Year 2009 award, admission to Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society, and other academic and athletic district honors. She graduated with honors, earning Summa Cum Laude.

Canessa is currently attending Jackson State University in Jackson, MS where she is scheduled to graduate in April, 2016. The same high level of academic achievement and involvement has followed Canessa to the university. She began her college career by earning Freshmen of the Year in 2013. Each year, Canessa has been on the Dean’s and President’s list and a MARC U*STAR Scholar. Of course, Canessa will be graduating with honors with a perfect 4.0 GPA. In addition to her outstanding academic standing, she has been involved in softball, earning 1st Team All-Conference (3 years) and All-Region Player (3rd Team).

When asked to what she attributes her tremendous college success, Canessa stated, “I can say that part of my success has been because of GPISD and the experiences I had which taught me how work hard and overcome the adversity that life may bring. The majority of my success, however, has stemmed from my mother and the amazing support group of friends and family that I strive to make proud with each day.” Her proud mother is still a coach and educator at Galena Park High School, inspiring students to achieve their own dreams of success. Canessa also has a younger sister, MacKenzie Swanson, who is a junior and is, according to Canessa, “Surpassing the footsteps I have left with each day.”

Canessa is currently determining where she wants to attend graduate school and ultimately obtain her Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She plans to use her graduate studies to conduct clinical research related to HIV or cancer.

GPISD is pleased Canessa still has a deep connection to the community and often comes back to participate in sports camps and serve as a featured guest speaker to help our young adults prepare for their bright futures.  Canessa stated, “I want to continue this outreach by potentially helping students get into research opportunities so they can explore the wonders of the scientific world.”

Without a doubt, the GPISD community and world will hear more about this triumphant graduate who is setting about making her mark on society! Thank you, Canessa, for allowing GPISD to become part of your great story.
